Nicholas Ballard - Chair of Equestrian Queensland

With a lifetime of experience in the equestrian industry as a competitor, owner, parent, official, and volunteer I am dedicated to giving back to this vibrant sport.

For the past five years, I have proudly served on the Equestrian Queensland (EQ) Board, including as Vice Chair in 2021 and Chair since 2022. This role has allowed me to build effective and lasting relationships that foster the sustainable growth of our community.

My priorities include:

  • Supporting affiliated clubs and event organisers who are the backbone of our sport to deliver safe, compliant events that create positive experiences for all participants.
  • Empowering EA-accredited officials by facilitating their continued accreditation as well as clarifying and improving pathways for new officials.
  • Championing EA-accredited coaches, whose vital role is to enhance our members' skills and confidence as they navigate the complexities of our sport.
  • Developing our athletes by improving pathways and opportunities for all including grassroots participants, talent identification and support for athletes on EA high performance programs to achieve success both domestically and on the global stage.

Over two years ago, Equestrian Australia (EA) and state branches initiated a nationally aligned strategy focused on collaboration, fairness, and transparency. I am motivated to nominate for the EA Board to uphold these values and nurture a united, thriving equestrian community across Australia.

I believe EA and state branches should prioritise the consistent and timely delivery of core services to members, clubs, officials, and coaches while enhancing support for national discipline committees to ensure our sport continues to thrive.

My collaborative leadership style embraces diverse viewpoints, fostering a culture of change and partnership. Throughout my tenure on the EQ Board, I have excelled at building cohesive relationships, leading to improved services and increased value for our members. I take pride in the constructive connections we have established with officials, coaches, athletes, supporters, and state branch staff, enhancing pathways and participation opportunities in Queensland.

For the past 30 years, I have operated my own business in the building and construction sector, holding various industry licenses and qualifications. I am also a FEI Level 1 Jumping Steward and an EA Level 2 Steward for both Eventing and Jumping. Additionally, I have completed a Sports Governance course with the Australian Institute of Company Directors to strengthen my experience with sports governance.

My professional and volunteer experiences have equipped me with strong skills in finance, governance, risk management, safety, strategy, project management, and communication. I am adept at collaborating with diverse stakeholders to achieve positive outcomes.

During my time on the EQ Board, I have worked closely with fellow directors and staff to foster a financially sustainable organisation, achieving over 5% annual membership growth while increasing value for our members. I am passionate about supporting event organisers, especially in regional areas, to ensure ongoing participation opportunities and developing young riders into future leaders.

I have also previously volunteered as Chair of the Interschool Queensland committee, Team Manager for Pony Club and Interschool Queensland state teams, and President of the Burpengary Equestrian Centre. My dedication to community service is evident through my volunteer work at numerous events each year.

I believe my knowledge, skills, and experience would be a valuable asset to the Board of Equestrian Australia. I am committed to upholding the organisation’s values and prioritising the interests of our members irrespective of what part they play in the sport.
